The City of Newcastle upon Tyne will host the 2010 ISPRS Commission V Symposium. Newcastle is a compact, modern, dynamic city where historic architecture vies with stunning contemporary design, creating an inspirational conference venue. North East England is one of the most beautiful, historic and diverse regions of the UK (see http://www.visitnortheastengland.com).

Slightly further afield, the English Lake District (http://www.golakes.co.uk) is only an hour away by car and Newcastle provides an excellent gateway to all that Scotland has to offer (http://www.visitscotland.com). With such world-class holiday destinations on the doorstep, and sterling at an all time low, delegates from both home and overseas could do far worse than schedule a relaxing holiday on the back of a busy 2010 Commission V Symposium.

Symposium Venue

The 2010 Commission V Symposium will be held at St James’ Park football stadium, a focal point of the city of Newcastle upon Tyne. St James’ has been the home ground of Newcastle United since 1892, and has been used for football since 1880. With a spectator capacity of 52,387 it is currently the seventh largest football stadium in the UK and boasts the largest cantilever roof in Europe. Should England be successful in its bid for the 2018 World Cup, St James’ Park will be a host stadium – with the possible exception of South Africa, what better place to spend the closing round one matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in June 2010? See http://www.stadiumguide.com/saintjamespark.htm for more information on the venue.

Accomodation

A full range of accommodation, from halls of residence to four-star hotel, is available for symposium delegates. You can visit the official ISPRS Commission V Symposium Accommodation Page to reserve your accommodation at the Symposium.

We recommend delegates consider Castle Court (single £47.50 per night, bed and breakfast), brand new en-suite student accommodation (opened September 2009) located only a stone’s throw from the conference venue of St James’ Park. Those on a tight budget may wish to consider the student accommodation at Hiscock House (£32.50, bed and breakfast), a recently refurbished wing of Castle Leazes Halls of Residence (also available at £30.00, bed and breakfast) immediately adjacent to Castle Court.
