Getting to Newcastle upon Tyne

By Air

Newcastle International Airport can easily be reached directly by air from numerous world-wide airports. Emirates operate daily flights from/to Dubai and a variety of airlines (including numerous budget carriers such as EasyJet, Ryanair and FlyBe) operate flights to countless European and domestic destinations. Examples of available flights (flying into Newcastle on Monday 21st June, returning on Friday 25th June) with fares (including all taxes, as of 2nd February 2010):

  • Paris CDG with EasyJet: €83

  • Barcelona with Ryanair: €53 (Sunday departure)
  • Hannover with FlyBe: €115

Newcastle International Airport is 10-15 minutes from Newcastle City Centre by car or taxi (cost approximately £15). The Tyne & Wear Metro System provides a direct link from the airport to the city, taking approximately 20 minutes and costing £2.80 (note that the Metro ticket machines only accept coins).

By Sea

By Rail

Newcastle is on the east coast mainline so is easily accessible by train. Get a 20% discount on rail travel using this link. The central railway station is about 15-20 minutes walk from the university or you can get a metro to Haymarket only two stops away, which will take around 5-10 minutes. Taxis from Central Station to the University campus, or Castle Leazes (halls of residence) should cost around £5-£6.

By Road

From the A1 North or South take the A184 slip road. Follow the signs for the A189 to cross the Redheugh Bridge, leading onto St. James’ Boulevard. Travel all the way to the bottom of the Boulevard. Turn left at the traffic lights onto Barrack Road (the Stadium is on the right) & over the next set of traffic lights moving into the right hand lane. Turn right at the next set of traffic lights into St. James’ Park. Free parking is available for Symposium delegates at St. James’ Park.
